Oftentimes when I meet people I am asked, “So what do you do?” And there are a dozen answers that I could give them:
- I make people stronger.
- I show people how to feel better.
- I empower people to live more aware of their bodies, to move pain-free, and to be proactive to live happier and healthier.
But most of the time I just tell them I am a teacher. I am one of many teachers in the fitness arena concerned with optimizing the body in movement, consistently and without injury. Basically, to teach the knowledge of movement and how it is essential in our daily lives. My approach is simple… Just move!
I began my career rather unexpectedly. I was struggling through a tremendous, difficult time in my life. I was depressed, not eating well, I lost 40lbs in a matter of weeks, stress was at its highest level. Physically and emotionally depleted, all I wanted to do was crawl in a hole and stay there. My body was weak, and spirit was fading away. But I had 2 beautiful young children who depended on me. I had to keep going and I needed to start taking care of myself or I would be no good for them. You know how the flight attendant tells you to put your own oxygen mask on first? It was like that.
I wasn’t much of a gym person. I ran occasionally. I basically got my exercise from being a full-time mom and running a restaurant which I co-owned. But at that point in my life I knew I needed help. I didn’t know where to start. So I called the local gym and hired a trainer. And that’s where it all began. I can remember the exact moment I realized how the simple act of moving my body was an absolute necessity in my life. I came home from a workout and for the first time in months, I felt amazing! I had energy, my mind was clear, I felt stronger, I had a smile on my face, I felt lighter. I felt empowered.
This was life changing for me. At that moment I wanted to share this feeling with anyone who was at a point in their life where they felt stuck and exhausted… And so the story goes.
20 years later I am still teaching/helping my clients learn about their bodies. Empowering them to know they can have a stronger, happier, healthier life. It’s just taking that first step…
